Mum’s the Word, 1997-8

Temporary public work for City of Boston, collaboration with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Aphasia Community Group, Boston, MA, Fund for the Arts commission

Cambridge-based artist Ellen Driscoll began this project, called “Mum’s the Word,” in honor of her father, who developed aphasia after a stroke in 1975. Philip Driscoll, who died in 1993, was a patient at Spaulding for six months after his stroke.

The 48 banner designs depict portraits of 12 volunteers from the aphasia support group at Spaulding rehabilitation hospital led by speech pathologist, Jerome Kaplan. Mum’s the Word was a public education project to increase understanding of aphasia.
